About Dr. Jorge Camara
Ophthalmologist, Educator, Researcher, Humanitarian, Pianist

Jorge G. Camara, M.D. was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the eldest of 12 children. He grew up in Manila, Philippines where he studied medicine at the University of the Philippines. He then moved to Houston, Texas where he completed his training in Ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine Cullen Eye Institute. He completed a post-residency fellowship in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, also at Baylor. He then started his practice in Honolulu, Hawaii where he has served the community locally and internationally for the past 25 years.

Dr. Camara has received numerous awards for his pioneering work in the field of ophthalmology and his international humanitarian work. His awards include Physician of the Year from the Hawaii Medical Association; Outstanding Humanitarian Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology; Louis Girard Award as Outstanding Alumnus from Baylor College of Medicine; and the Noblesse Oblige Award from Maryknoll School. His work has been shown on CNN Headline News and NBC Nightline News.

Dr. Camara is also internationally recognized for his humanitarian work with the Aloha Medical Mission and for establishing a training program in ophthalmic reconstructive surgery for ophthalmologists from Southeast Asia. He is also a professor at the University of Hawaii’s John A. Burns School of Medicine

Dr. Camara started his piano studies at age 6. He produced and performed in three sold-out concerts benefiting the Aloha Medical Mission in 2004, 2005 and 2007 in Honolulu’s Neal Blaisdell Center. He is the first surgeon to place a piano in the operating room to perform for his patients and the first to produce a CD recorded live in the operating room. The music performed on Live From the Operating Room has been shown scientifically to lower the blood pressure, heart and respiratory rates of 115 patients, and it may do the same for you.
